FEA celebrates pioneering students, alumni, and faculty

Twelve faculty members were honored for contributions to their professions, comprising of six from AUB and six from other universities.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture held its15th annual Student and Alumni Conference, which is always an important AUB event but is particularly resonant this year for two reasons, the University’s 150th anniversary celebrations and the last conference presided over by outgoing Dean Dr. Makram Suidan.

The two-day conference included working sessions addressing all areas of engineering and architecture. In the spirit of sesquicentennial ambition, FEA turned the conference into a national event, inviting papers from all Lebanese universities and their graduates and honoring faculty outside AUB.

The opening ceremony, held in the faculty conference hall, was addressed by Interim Provost Dr. Muhamad Harajli, himself a graduate of FEA and former chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department.

Dean Suidan thanked all in the audience and said that the format of this conference has constantly evolved since it was started by Dean Ibrahim Hajj in 2001. He detailed the conference program and expressed hope the new format, by including other universities, would make it a conference for all engineers in Lebanon.

He said in the past fall semester, 2245 students were registered in the Bachelor’s program while 263 students were working for their Master’s and 68 were studying for the Ph.D. He also reviewed the establishment of new departments at FEA—Chemical Engineering and Petroleum, and Industrial Engineering and Management, in addition to a biomedical engineering graduate studies program.

Interim AUB Provost Dr. Muhamad Harajli spoke next, welcoming the attendance and reminding the audience of the university’s permanent commitment to educate new generations who will contribute in turn to their societies and their fields of specializations.

Dr. Harajli went on to say the conference provides a unique forum for students, alumni and faculty members to present new and creative ideas and to exchange expertise. He said it is also an opportunity for them to celebrate their impact on Lebanon, the region and the world, adding: “FEA and the university administration will continue to improve educational opportunities and services to the students”.

Lifetime achievers

After the welcome speeches, appreciation awards were distributed to FEA faculty and alumni and participants from other educational establishments. Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Professor Emeritus Dr. Fateh Sakkal, and Mr. Riad al-Sadik. Mr a-Sadik followed the ceremony and addressed the audience via an internet connection as he was unable to travel to Beirut.

Dr. Sakkal joined FEA in 1959, becoming chair of the Mechanical Engineering department. Since retiring in 1992 he has dedicated himself to charity and endowment work, including the establishment of an award for the best thesis on renewable energy in the mechanical engineering department.

As an eminent entrepreneur and visionary construction magnate, as an educator and as a man of cultured refinement, Dr. Suidan acclaimed him as “one of our most illustrious alumni… who has whole-heartedly embraces AUB’s motto of ‘living an abundant life’.

Dr. Suidan introduced Mr. al-Sadik as someone who “exemplifies the characteristics” that an AUB education seeks to fashion: “Engaged citizens, leaders in their communities, models of ethical and humane behavior in their personal and professional lives.”

The lifetime achievement awards were the climax of a session which also included Distinguished Alumnus and Distinguished Young Alumnus awards of the six departments that make up FEA, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Architecture and Design, Industrial Engineering and Management, and Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Twelve faculty members were honored for contributions to their professions, comprising of six from AUB and six from other universities.
