Fawzi W. Azar Architectural Award recognizes AUB student creativity

Just like every year since 1996, Architecture students at AUB’s Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture proposed designs for the Fawzi W. Azar Architectural Award; this year’s theme centered on Beirut and its art scene. Students worked over summer to develop a proposal for Beirut’s Performing Arts center, on a site on Riad El Solh Street, downtown Beirut.
The award ceremony took place on September 28, announcing winning projects in the presence of Founder and CEO of Builders Design Consultants Nabil Azar, VP for Advancement Imad Baalbaki, Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Salma Oueida, Chairperson of the Architecture Department Dr. Mona Harb, as well as faculty and students.
Fifth-year student Mohamad Nahle won the first place and was awarded $ 10,000. The winning scheme was selected for its creative and minimalistic approach, which cleverly dealt with the site’s changing slope and its connection to the surrounding urban context, integrating the entire building as a performance space. Two runner-up projects were also recognized and each received $ 2,500; one, by Lea Ramadan, for its daring conceptual vision and the other, by Emil Abou Hamdan, for its skillful integration of landscape and architecture.
Assistant Professor Carla Aramouny, who is also award coordinator, highlighted the importance of this award for the Department of Architecture.
“It is one of the most prestigious and targeted awards that recognizes students based on merit and their ability to develop a full architecture brief,” said Aramouny.
The Fawzi W. Azar Architectural Award is an annual tradition established by the Azar Family and Builders Design Consultants in 1996 and is based on a juried competition. Until today, more than 30 students have been awarded, and many more have benefited from the experience of participating in such a competition.
