One of the most respected university ranking systems, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), has just released its highly anticipated rankings by subject and the American University of Beirut (AUB) has yet again proven that it can count itself among the world’s best.

AUB featured among the top 500 of global universities in four of the five QS broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences and Medicine; and Social Sciences and Management. In addition, AUB was one of only eight universities from the Arab world (along with three from Egypt and four from Saudi Arabia) to be ranked in one or more subject areas.

Within the category of Arts and Sciences, AUB ranked especially highly in two specific subject areas, being placed among the top 200 globally in Philosophy and Archaeology (151-200). No other institution in the Arab world was ranked in these two subject areas.

In addition, AUB maintained its place in Medicine from previous years, ranking among the top 251-300 globally and at the very top in the Arab world, along with King Saud University. Computer Science also ranked between 451-500 for the second year in a row. Multiple entities contributed to this computer science ranking, including the Department of Computer Science and other departments that conduct software-related research such as Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture and the Business Information and Decision Systems Track in the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business.

“I am thrilled that three out of the four subjects on which AUB was ranked are in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I would like to congratulate the departments of Philosophy; History and Archaeology; and Computer Science; as well as the faculty at large for continuing to excel in their areas of research.  The effort of the faculty across departments shows in the rankings as well as in other equally important indicators,” said Dean Nadia El Cheikh. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is AUB’s first and largest faculty and these rankings confirm that the education and research being done at FAS is globally competitive.

The methodology utilized by QS combines analysis from their Global Employer and Academic Surveys with bibliometric data from the Scopus database. So these results are a testimony to AUB’s sterling reputation among academics and employers worldwide as well as excellent research performance by its faculty and students.

QS evaluated 4,438 universities around the world and analyzed almost 19,000 individual programs to come up with the university rankings by subject in 2017.

These subject area rankings follow a strong showing by AUB in the overall university rankings, where the university came in at #228 globally and #2 in the Arab region.
